Bad Guy / Speak No Evil - 30 sec clip

One of MY favorite things is the Annual Jazz & Blues Holiday Party. This group features three fabulous singers - Courtney Lemmon, Gina Saputo and Crystal Starr. We have worked together for 8+ years and I just love these women. Each is a fantastic soloist in their own right, and then the blend of the voices is heavenly. We were unable to do this last year due to COVID, but we are back in action next weekend!

On Sunday December 5 The Jazz & Blues Holiday Party returns to Feinsteins at Vitello's in Studio City CA. Tickets start at $30, doors open at 6:30 for dinner and music starts at 8:00 PM.

This show usually sells out, so get tickets now, here:

Not ready to venture out to a club? We are livestreaming the show as well, with a HD 5-camera shoot, tickets are $20, sign up here:

We are going LIVE in Berkeley CA!!! Join us!

George Kahn Quartet:

One Fine Thing - LIVE

At long last, we are bringing live jazz back. Zoom concerts are all well are good, but there is nothing like the excitement of a live jazz performance, where the band is cooking and the interaction with the audience is electric.

To celebrate, the band is traveling up to Berkeley California on  SUNDAY AUGUST 1 to do a show at The Backroom, Sam Rudin's cool listening space. I'll be bringing my rhythm section from Los Angeles, David Hughes and MB Gordy, and we will be joined by San Francisco jazz guitar stalwart Gary Zellerbach (a college buddy of mine from way back). It'll be ONE FINE THING!

We will be playing songs from DreamCatcher, our 2020 Top-5 jazz release, which is now in consideration for a Grammy for best Jazz Album. The Back Room welcomes all acoustically-based genres, including jazz, blues, folk, bluegrass, Americana, and more, and is an all-ages venue. Children under 12 are free. No food is served, but you can BYOB. This is a LISTENING ROOM, for sure.

Tickets are $15 each, $10 for students, and the music runs from 7:00 - 9:00 PM Please buy tickets in advance, the room only hold 100 people max, and it may sell out. RSVP HERE

A Change Is Gonna Come

 Jennifer Hudson:

A Change Is Gonna Come

This is a big week, for the country and for me personally. We have a new President and a new administration, and I have a Top 5 jazz album on the charts! It certainly feels like change is coming.

Like most R&B artists of his time, Sam Cooke focused on singles; in all, he had 29 top 40 hits on the pop charts and more on the R&B charts. He was a prolific songwriter and wrote most of the songs he recorded. He also had a hand in overseeing some of the song arrangements.

Sam Cooke's career met an untimely end in 1964 when he was shot by a motel manager at the end of a drunken evening gone terribly bad. He was 33 years old.

If you have watched the new movie "One Night In Miami" you know that the movie ends with a performance of "A Change Is Gonna Come" by Leslie Odom Jr. who does a fantastic job in his portrayal of Sam Cooke. The song was released after Sam's death as a B-side to a single. "A Change Is Gonna Come" is considered a classic protest song from the era. It became a top 40 pop hit and a top 10 R&B hit.

Here is the original single by Sam Cooke:

And here is a fantastic performance by Jennifer Hudson, one of the truly under-appreciated soul singers of her generation.
